Lubbock-Cooper’s building momentum came to a screeching halt on Monday. The No. 9-ranked Pirates’ season was put on a two-week hiatus due to an outbreak of COVID-19, the school announced.

Second-year LCP coach Chip Darden issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

“Lubbock-Cooper ISD administrators have identified multiple confirmed cases of COVID-19 affecting the varsity football program at Lubbock-Cooper High School. While the exposure risk does not affect all team members, a significant number of players have been identified as having close contact with infected individuals and have been placed on a quarantine status in coordination with the City of Lubbock Health Department.

“The varsity football program will be suspended for the next 14 days.”

The statement also indicates that the district is in direct contact with parents of team members identified as close contacts of infected individuals. All district families are urged to continue to closely monitor students for any symptoms of the virus and to report any possible symptoms to the LCISD Health Services Department.

Two Pirate games will be shifted to back end of the schedule, a contingency that was built in by District 2-5A Division II. LCP will host Wichita Falls Rider at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, then go to Wichita Falls High for a 7 p.m. game on Nov. 12.

No other athletic programs or scheduled events are affected as of yet, although the LCP volleyball team’s match at Lubbock High has been postponed because the Westerners are in the second week of quarantine.

After missing two games, the Lubbock High football team returned to action this week and will take on Coronado at 7 p.m. Friday at Plains Capital Park.
