Volunteer firefighters responded to a fire at Lubbock-Cooper Middle School after reports of smoke in the board room around 10:30, Thursday morning.
According to a statement, students were evacuated immediately, per district protocol, and bused to the LCISD Performing Arts Center.
The report stated no flames were ever present in the building and the smoke was due to a malfunctioning heat unit.
Spokesperson with Lubbock-Cooper ISD said students and staff were not in danger at any point and all were evacuated without injury.
The new South Elementary building was not damaged by the smoke and the students and staff of South Elementary were not evacuated.
While firefighters clear and reopen the building, students will eat lunch at the High School campus. After lunch, they’ll be returned to the Middle School.
According to the spokesperson from Lubbock-Cooper ISD, if you’re a parent and want to pick up your LCMS child before they return to their campus, you can park in the west parking lot at Lubbock-Cooper High School and pick students up from the LCISD Performing Arts Center.
